CHURCH ACCOMPANIST Job Description

I. DUTIES
1. The Church Accompanist shall play for Sunday morning worship services and choir rehearsals one night per week. The Accompanist will normally select the prelude, offertory, communion, and postlude music for worship services. The Accompanist shall notify the Church Office of the titles and composers of selected music by the weekly deadline for the bulletin. The Accompanist shall begin the prelude a few minutes before 9:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings, such that it ends no later than 9:15 a.m.
2. In addition, the Accompanist shall provide music for occasional special services that include: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve. These special services, summer music programs, and other special events may require infrequent special rehearsals with the choirs, soloists, or instrumentalists. Dates and times for these special rehearsals will be agreed upon in advance with the Choir Director.
3. The Accompanist shall meet with the Choir Director and/or Pastor, on at least a seasonal basis, to coordinate musical themes, plan music selections, and assist with ordering and organizing music, when necessary.

4. The Accompanist shall notify the Choir Director and Pastor of any routine maintenance or repairs that are needed for the piano or organ. The Accompanist shall work with the Church Office to schedule piano or organ maintenance and repairs and shall evaluate the results, as needed, to ensure that these instruments are properly tuned and maintained in good working order.
5. If agreed upon and for additional compensation, the Accompanist shall substitute for the Choir Director during choir rehearsals or Sunday worship services.
6. If available and for1. The Accompanist will be hired by the Personnel Committee, acting in cooperation with the Pastor and the Worship Committee and with the approval of Session.
2. The Accompanist is directly responsible to the Pastor. Any difficulties in staff relationships, which cannot be satisfactorily resolved in discussion with the Pastor, will be referred to the Worship and Personnel Committees at the request of either party, to help resolve these problems.
3. The Accompanist will follow the direction of the Choir Director and shall work cooperatively with the Choir Director during planning, selecting, and playing music for rehearsals and services.
4. The Choir Director or Pastor may periodically provide evaluations of performances, music selections, or other critiques. The Accompanist shall amend playing style, revise music selections, or meet other reasonable requests to meet the needs of the Congregation as identified by the Choir Director or Pastor.
5. The Accompanist will receive choir music from the Choir Director well in advance of choir rehearsals to allow sufficient time for practice and transposition, when needed.
6. The Accompanist shall coordinate Sanctuary practice time through the Church Office to ensure availability and to avoid conflicts or interruptions. additional compensation, the Accompanist shall play music for memorial services and weddings. The Accompanist may meet with families to plan music for memorial services and weddings and shall rehearse as needed with choirs, soloists, or instrumentalists.

II. WORKING AND REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

1. The Accompanist will be hired by the Personnel Committee, acting in cooperation with the Pastor and the Worship Committee and with the approval of Session.

III. QUALIFICATIONS

1. Formal music training and at least three years of experience as a piano accompanist with recommendations from previous employers.
2. Ability to sight read music.
3. Ability to transpose music to more desirable keys.
4. Possess a well-rounded repertoire of music for preludes, offertory, communion, and postludes.
5. Sensitivity to suitable type of music for the flow and meaning of the worship service and ability to bridge musically different parts of the service.
6. Ability to adapt piano accompaniment for hymns to enable and enhance congregational singing.
7. The Accompanist must also have patience, good communication skills, and a willingness to work as part of a team for the glory of God.

IV. VACATION AND LEAVE

1. St. Andrew Presbyterian Church provides two weeks of vacation each year with pay after the end of the six month probationary period. The Accompanist shall work with the Pastor and Choir Director to plan vacation time with sufficient advance notice to allow the Choir Director to find substitute accompanists, when needed.
2. Sick leave, bereavement leave, and other leave are described in St. Andrew’s Personnel Policy, Section V. The Accompanist shall inform the Pastor and Choir Director of any unanticipated absences with as much advance warning as possible.

V. COMPENSATION

1. Our church is committed to worship and music. We anticipate that our Accompanist’s job will require approximately 8 hours a week for preparation, choir rehearsal and the Sunday service. Since extra services and rehearsals during the Lent and Christmas seasons are balanced out with fewer rehearsals during the summer, additional compensation is not provided for these extra services. Instead, we offer a steady salary year-round of $275.00 per week, paid biweekly, which includes the paid leave time discussed in Part IV.
2. If the Accompanist agrees to substitute as Choir Director pursuant to Part I.5., the Accompanist will receive additional compensation of $50.00 per event (rehearsal or Sunday worship service.)
3. If the Accompanist agrees to play for memorials or weddings, the Accompanist will receive additional compensation for preparation time, rehearsal time, and playing during the event. Fees for such events are established and approved by Session. Compensation for such events will be no less than $35.00 per hour.

VI. GENERAL

1. It is our policy to consider candidates without prejudicial regard to race, ethnic origin, age, sex, gender orientation, or marital status.
2. The new Accompanist will be evaluated during an initial six month probationary period after two months, four months, and six months of employment. The Accompanist shall also be evaluated annually, typically in January. Evaluations will be conducted by the Personnel Committee, in consultation with the Pastor and Choir Director.
3. Should circumstances evolve where either the Accompanist or the church desire to terminate this agreement, each party agrees that maximum advance notice will be given and in no event shall such notice be less than two Sundays prior to the termination date.
